With commissioning having recently been completed and the first train being successfully stacked at the end of April, TAKRAF’s rail-mounted stacker at an important bulk terminal on Australia’s Queensland Coast has been handed over to the operator for ongoing operation.
The order for the stacker covered design, fabrication, supply, installation, commissioning and handover. The stacker replaces an existing machine, originally installed as part of the initial development of the terminal in the early 1980s, which was coming to the end of its life. The order is part of an ongoing works program to sustain operations at this bulk handling facility.
The new stacker boasts an initial stacking capacity of 6,300 t/h. Leveraging TAKRAF’s experience in high-capacity material handling technologies, the machine was designed from the outset to accommodate a peak volumetric rate of up to 10,700m³/h (equal to 9,600 t/h) for a scheduled future upgrade. This is ensured by the following design features:
- Overall machine design for future capacity upgrade
- 2 m wide boom conveyor designed for a drive upgrade
- Tripper car prepared to accommodate a wider stockyard conveyor
This machine is designed for large volumes and features a massive 62 m long curved boom, making it one of the largest ever delivered. Furthermore, its unique design features make it one of the most technically advanced too.
The machine was fabricated in Australia, with the structures being completed to a stage where it was practicable to transport them by road, but also minimized the time spent on site to dress the structure out before installation. Scheduling of site erection of the machine needed to take into account the potentially challenging climatic conditions of North-East Queensland with high humidity levels in the summer months, the possibility of cyclones and heavy rain in the wet season.
Gavin Smith, TAKRAF Australia Project/Construction Manager, had this to say from site: “Our supportive client, the TAKRAF Group organization and all stakeholders should be commended on this project’s progress and what was achieved, notwithstanding complex times and challenges. The commitment and extensive collective experience of our TAKRAF team in materials handling has undoubtedly played a large part in meeting our client’s rigorous specifications and inspection regime. We look forward to the machine delivering upon its design promise.”
